Eggs and Ganache

Food and music = happy. Not necessarily together...wouldn't wanna see a concert while eating or watch singing food but yeah. Fwee.

Today after I got home from food lab (at around 10:30pm...we got out of class at 10PM!), my roommate appeared wielding nicolettes. That might not be the right name, but anyway...they're these cookie sandwiches with ganache filling. delicious. My mum and I used to load up on these when we went to Wegmans and I've bought a few from La Maison du Chocolat. The cookies are chewy meringues and are basically SO GOOD. The end. What a nice thing to come back to after spending what felt like all day at school. :) I also got to eat ganache out of the pot and my roommate made a smore for me. Ooohh smores....melted marshmallow is yum. So maybe I will make something WITH my roommate at some point, that would be cool. Or I might screw it up...

Today in food lab we focused on eggs and dairy (mainly eggs) so I think today I've eaten more than 5 eggs. God knows. I ate a lot of the custard sauce I made, which was a lot like melted ice cream (I mean, you'd put it in an ice cream machine to make...ice cream). I also made mayonnaise, which is some nasty stuff. But if you're gonna eat it, at least make it yourself. One of my lab partners made cheese souffles and they were delicious, at least if you like cheese and egg. I didn't know I did, but...it was good. Better than a quiche at least, which is also cheese and egg.

So. Um. My idea to cut out bad food isn't working. For lunch, I went to Chinatown with a friend and we went to a super-cheap restaurant on Bayard Street. For $2.75 I got a dish of rice, chicken, chinese sausage, and a fried egg. Yeah, it's one of the least Robyn-like dishes in the world. But you know what? ...whatever, I'll eat it. And it was good.

Why I Don't Have Food

When I lived alone, people would look at my kitchen as being very sad. "You have nothing! ARE YOU HUMAN?" There wasn't much food in it (the refrigerator was practically empty) but it was for good reason; if I have food around, I'll eat it. Whatever happens to be around would have to be pretty inedible on it's own for me to not eat it (such as the bottle of olive oil I have. I've also considered digging into the bag of sugar I have with a spoon, but thankfully have not been pushed to do so. If I do, I'll let you know ...after I've been taken to a mental institution).

However, I have a roommate now and the kitchen is well stocked with edible substances that might be digestible. I still wouldn't eat most of them, but today for lunch I ate about a third of my roommate's angel food cake and four of her marshmallows. I feel fine, but I know this isn't healthy at all. God knows what my body is getting out of this. I'm predicting that I'll get diabetes when I get older.

Honestly though, I was too lazy to go out. I eat with a friend nearly every Wednesday and if something comes up, she usually calls. I haven't heard from her today. Hm. Chinatown is less than 15 minutes away but I'm still in my pajamas. This is sad.

And I ate my roommate's food. [sigh]

---

UPDATE: My roommate has had a loaf of bread in the fridge for a while. I ate a slice. God...dammit. If she doesn't come back soon, I'll eat all her worldly possessions. On the upside, I actually changed out of my pajamas into real clothing that has not been subjected to rolling around in my bed that is probably full of microscopic dust mites feeding on my dead skin cells (hey, they're in your bed too).

Late Night in Chinatown

Actually, I wasn't in Chinatown that late, but my nutrition and diet class ended a lot later than usual, aka, it actually ended when it was supposed to (around 7:30 PM). The class was pretty interesting and told me that the way I eat isn't very good. Apparently, I portray a lot of the symptoms of binge eating disorder. Before I was on my way to being orthorexic and now I'm on my way to being a binge eater. Lovely.

I have no idea why I find it so hard to control what I eat sometimes. I mean, today I was crazy to eat all that angel food cake, but it felt like nothing (I guess that's the point of angel food cake). I'm not so digusted with the amount of food I eat that I eat alone, though. I tend to eat a lot around other people, actually. I don't really have binge eating disorder, but I hate displaying any symptoms of eating disorders. Everyone probably has some symptoms, but I don't know anyone who seems to have as much of a problem with eating as I do without actually having a serious problem. And I talk about food a lot more than normal people it seems...

...it doesn't help having this blog, eh?

So. Chinatown. I decided to stop into Chinatown on my walk back to my dorm from campus (from Bleeker Street to Water Street) and it took less than 40 minutes. Not bad. It was colder than I thought it would be through so I had some respiratory constriction (I've had asthma since I was little for whatever reason). I was on a mission to get dumplings and I'm happy to report that the dumpling place on Grand Street near Mott makes MM YUMMY DUMPLINGS, YES. I bought a bag of 50 mushroom, cabbage and rice noodle dumplings for $11. I have since eaten about 15 of them. Damn, that was too many. I also bought three persimmons and a bundle of spinach. I'm lacking veggies inside my belly. :( And I did the very, VERY bad thing of going to a bakery on Mott St that was having a SALE, of all things. I've never been to a bakery in Chinatown that was having a sale. Three various buns for $1. Yeah, I'm screwed.

So I do eat a lot. No surprise for those who know me. Tomorrow I don't have any classes so I'll probably stay in my room all day pigging out on delicious dumplings.

---

UPDATE: I ate too much. I feel like dying. DEATH.

pseudo breakfast

I went to bed sometime between 3 and 4 AM this morning, but I woke up at around 10 AM. To me that doesn't really fulfill the "sleep all day" goal I had in mind since my morning class was cancelled. I woke up partly because my roommate woke up though. And her cell phone rang. And she put the TV on. I'm sorry, but I still find TV to emit one of the most annoying sounds, although I can understand why she'd want the background noise on (I used to leave a TV on all the time for noise; now I listen to music).

I don't usually eat this early, but I scarfed down a persimmon and a sweet bun. Damn. I could live off that bakery...maybe I should go back. THREE BUNS FOR A DOLLAR.

Or should I go somewhere new? Today I should do homework and laundry, but the new Jacque Torress chocolate shop just opened. I am tempted, but it might be sad for me to visit a chocolate shop by myself. Times like this make me wonder if I have any friends.

"end of chem lab" lunch splurge

Today was my last chem lab of the year (perhaps of my life), so my lab partner Mimi and I went on a lunch splurge. Actually, we went on what may had been a bigger lunch splurge last Friday, but...well, every Friday is for eating.

Bulgogi lunchbox from Mandoo Bar.

Mimi wanted to try a Korean place so we went to Mandoo Bar near school. We each got a lunchbox (she the noodle/jap chae, me the bulgogi) for $8 and it was deeeelicious. I haven't eaten meat all week so I decided to try the beef, although the jap chae was my second choice (ridiculously yummy noodles, although I didn't know they were made of sweet potato?). We were also given some kimchee, which made Mimi cry. She's still getting used to the spiciness. I really liked the dumplings, which were nicely crisped on the outside with juicy meat on the inside. I want to go again!

Pastries at City Bakery.

Even before we received our orders we were already talking about what we'd get for dessert (we have a common mindset). After lunch we went to the Union Square Greenmarket and got a small pumpkin pie ($4) to share. Then we went to City Bakery, which I heard had really good hot chocolate. Their hot chocolate costs $4 for a small, but it was worth the splurge (next time I'll go for the $5 large). The hot chocolate came out of a big metal pot and was put in a wide cup/bowl with a dusting of cocoa powder on top. It wasn't too sweet or bitter and was much thicker than regular hot chocolate. However, I think I was expecting an icing-like consistency from what I had heard about it. ;) Everything there looked delicious but was on the expensive side, so it's not a place I'd go very much. Maybe in the dead of winter when I'm freezing my bum off and am in dire need of a chocolate coating in my esophagus I'll trek back up there. The pumpkin pie was nice, although I realized I just like the filling (obviously, or I'd just eat crust), so why don't people sell just the filling, or maybe pumpkin pudding? I'd totally go to pumpkin pudding! [keeps this in mind for next week's Thanksgiving dinner.]

I was pretty full after lunch but after the dessert-ing, I actually felt less full. I could've eaten more, but that would've been a bad idea. I've gained a lot of weight this week (which I can tell from the tightness of these pants, which are quite large; I've had them for the past six years) so I'm not sure if I can take any more fooding today. But it's definitely worth it to go out and try new things with a friend than eat, say, a healthy orange alone in your room. :)

I hate kitchens

I know I'm abnormal, but it really bothers me how people will just keep food around and not eat it right away. Sure, you're not supposed to eat an entire box of cereal in a day, but that's what I would do, thus I do not buy cereal. My roommate has a box of Cheerios and a box of Triscuits in the cupboard, two foods that I would never buy. But of course, I tried some. The Triscuits were really salty and the Cheerios were really sweet, but those are rather addictive flavors. I'm more drawn to the Cheerios, of course. She also has a bag of marshmallows, which I would never buy because I could easily eat the entire bag. I know you're not supposed to, but my brain...well, it doesn't work well (don't ask me why I'm in college). I'm not sure how to get around this desire to eat nearly everything in site besides sticks of butter. It's all a mental exercise; how did I stay on a raw food diet? I told myself that all cooked food was poison to my body, although not to other people since they were all obviously functioning human beings. Somewhat. After eating lots of random crap last night, I just feel fucked to the point that it'd be easier to eat nothing at all.

and then the stress comes

I feel sufficiently guilty about all of my roommate's Cheerios and marshmallows I ate, partly because they weren't mine but mainly because I feel like I'm becoming a fat, unhealthy American blob. I'm not used to having foods like Cheerios and marshmallows around and I think it's screwing me up. On the bus I realized that this is the first time in my life that I'm living with a person who eats a relatively average American diet (she's a vegetarian) and will have relatively average American food around. I talked to my mum on the phone and she was asking me why I'm going nuts (my wording, not hers) and...god, I don't know. I wanted to cry after talking to her because I feel like I'm just letting my body down by filling it with junk.

And on that note, do you want to know what I'm eating right now? Healthy Times Vanilla Biscuits for Teethers. I wanted to try em out. They're yummy, although have nonexistent nutrients. Oh well. Today I also ate some Cheerios and apples, but I swear I won't eat the Cheerios anymore. Why? I bought my own cereal, knowing very well that I'd probably eat too much of it but otherwise I'd eat the Cheerios.

I feel somewhat alone in my food madness. Can anyone relate to me? I'm sure people would suggest just not eating the food, but...it's there. I know it's all in my head, as when I think about eating I also think about how un-hungry I am. It's not that I'm full (I woke up sometime afer 1PM today, so I didn't really eat lunch), but I can eat. I'm capable of eating and I don't feel like puking if I eat too much. That would help prevent me from overeating.

I wish food didn't stress me out so much. WHY DOES IT DO THIS!? Why can't I handle it? I want to live in a single and not be exposed to all these foods! Argh! And I feel so guilty about getting the cereal (it took me forever to find one that I didn't think sucked, but then my mum told me that shredded wheat is bad and I would've been better off getting rice-based cereal or just going to Chinatown and eating freshly baked items). I even bought MILK! I couldn't find milk that wasn't homogenized, which made me sad. :( This is the first time I bought milk without the intention of putting it in something else, like in ice cream. I didn't grow up drinking milk. But i got milk to go with the cereal.

...Argh. ARGH! I just want to shout a lot and swear and burn the kitchen down. At least I got apples so maybe I can balance out the crap, but I know that doesn't work. I have to cut down the crap. I have to do something that won't make me go too crazy, but...look, I'm going crazy. I feel alone.

decreasing food supply

So what's happening to all that food I ate today? I ate 8 of the biscuits. The box has 12 biscuits! I think it would take a baby all month to get through them, seeing as they are for teething and are rather hardy, but I chomp through them in three bites. Dammit.

I like shredded wheat. Arrowhead Mills makes nice shredded wheat. My mum said it was really unhealthy though, so I guess I can't buy it again.

I still have 5 apples left, so I'm all good for tomorrow.

...cereal is addictive.

November 21, 2004

no cups

I don't have any drinking cups. I guess this is weird, but I generally only drink bottled water (I hope you don't think I'm a water snob, but if it's almost the only thing you drink, you'd want it to be...not full of stuff from the pipes). I bought milk yesterday and realized I didn't have a cup to drink it in. I actually used my measuing cup first and then I remembered I had a small jar. It's pretty small, but that's my new cup.

Today I woke up at around 12:30 PM and since then I've eaten 2 apples, milk, and a lot of cereal. The box had 13 ounces and I'm probably going to finish it today. Cereal is probably supposed to last longer than that.

--- UPDATE (6 hours later) ---

The cereal is now nothing more than an empty box in the trashcan. Little bits of shredded wheat corpses are mooshed in the inner bag. Aw. So 13 ounces of cereal lasted about 30 hours. Obviously I should never buy/eat cereal again. I'd be 1400 calories lighter. :|

I ate a baked sweet potato for dinner. Sweet potatoes are yum, so I think for Thanksgiving I'll make mashed sweet potatoes for the grand total of three of us eating together (my mum, brother, and I). I'll also try making chestnut ice cream because my mum happens to have chestnuts around. Wooo.

I ate three apples today. Mm, apples are the yum.

...I wish I'd stop eating so much. :(

November 22, 2004

apples make me sick

I don't think all apples could make me sick, but today I ate a golden delicious apple and then a red delicious apple before my stomach plummeted into achey-ness. Maybe it was just bad timing, but I've had experiences in the past associating apples with tummy aches. However, I didn't get a tummy ache for my past two days of apple eating, so...I don't know.

And now I don't have food. Well, I have dumplings and a sweet potato, but I'm thinking of going to Chinatown to get some persimmons and pastries. That's the dream Robyn diet. ;)

I haven't been outside in more than 36 hours. Hm.

tasting is half the fun

Yummy cake from Chinatown

You know something is going to be good when you can feel the smell (or rather, the smell makes you ... feel). I went to Chinatown today with Diana and got some baked goods. I'm not totally sure what the name of one of the things I got was, but it had walnuts on the top, so I'll call it a walnut cake. As I brought the cake to my mouth, I could smell the buttery sweetness, which made me predict the delicate sweetness and tenderness that would enter my mouth. And it did. [drool] I'm still eating it now, actually.

Vegetable dumplings from Lin's Dumpling House

Diana wanted to go to Lin's Dumpling House, which we went to more than a month ago (I remember the day since it was before we saw Magnet at Pianos; one of the best days EVER). Their vegetable dumplings are excellent. They have a lot more than dumplings but their dumplings are great, so just get those.

Even though I had eaten enough to last me the rest of the day, I ended up finishing the dumplings I bought last Wednesday for dinner. Luckily my roommate ate two of them, so I didn't totally pig out (I ate 6). I'm glad she finally ate some of my food instead of me always eating hers. ;P

Still savouring the cake. Mm. Tomorrow in food lab we're making bread and muffins, which means I shouldn't eat anything before hand. I guess if I'm desparate I'll dip into my persimmon stash...er, which is just three because I ate two of them already. Persimmons are the yum.

bread heaven

My intro to foods lab tonight was awesome. Our focus was yeast breads and muffins. A low-carb dieter's nightmare, aka ROBYN HEAVEN! [rub's belly] My group made rye bread (more like a hint of rye) and blueberry muffins. Other groups made corn muffins, challah bread, italian rolls, bran muffins, pumpkin-ee spice muffins, chocolate chip muffins, whole wheat-ish rolls...it was all good. We also had to do an experiment observing yeast and how it reacts with sugar, salt, and water. JOOOY! For some reason I always dread food lab before I actually get there and start doing stuff, but then it always ends up being fun and happy (partially due to the fact that I have cool lab partners). We actually got out at 9:30 today, as opposed to closer to 10 PM. And I'm full of yummy things. :)

In my intro to foods lecture we gave presentations on food science related articles. Mine was...probably the worst. Some people actually brought in food and gave people hand-outs! I wasn't the only one who was food and hand out less, but if I knew people were bringing food, maybe I would've made pudding. I talked about an experiment that compared vegetable based gels to milk based gels. ...yeah, it's exciting.

For lunch I was planning to just come back to my dorm (after a depressing chem test that I probably didn't get an A on, which is ridiculous because it was easy and I JUST SUCK) but my friend wanted to go to Chinatown, so we did that. Chinatown two days in a row, ack! We went to Yuen Yuen Restaurant on Bayard Street for the second time (first time was just a week ago) for some cheap eats. For $3.25 I got a huge plate of rice, peas, and beef all drenched in mystery brown sauce. God knows what was in it, but it was good. And not unrecognizable. Their special, which has a fried egg, chinese sausage, chicken, and rice, costs $2.75. If you want a lot of cheap food, go there.

So today was a happy fooding day spend with other people. I'm satisfied. Tomorrow night I'm going home and for thanksgiving I'm going to make ice cream, sweet mashed potatoes, and Norwegian cookies. Mm.

November 24, 2004

snacks are not robyn-friendly

So since I've been home I've eaten many cookies (some given to me by my roommate), some peach tart, some potato chips, some paella, some...okay, I guess that was it. But that's a lot! And I don't feel like I'm going to explode, which is kind of worrying.

I've noticed that I don't get as thirsty as most people (in addition to my ability to eat way more). And I've been thinking about why my stomach doesn't stick out much despite the craploads of food I eat...maybe my liver isn't big? If you have an enlarged liver then that can put your tummy out...or I may have made that up. Or MAYBE my liver is swimming among my small intestines, which would explain why that region is so large.

...erm, yeah. There was a bit of very non-sciency health info for you. Or not.

Seating area in The Republic
Glass noodles at The Republic

I ate lunch at The Republic with Diana and her cool friend Ava, who I had met last year at the Radiohead concert we all went to. The restaurant specializes in noodle dishes that would go under "fusion cusine", methinks. It had a slight hipster/trendy feel to it, but the atmosphere was cute. I liked how the tables were set up (communal style long tables so two groups could spare the same one and benches instead of chairs). I ordered the glass noodles, aka rice noodles, Diana got pad thai, and Ava got udon that was green colored from the sauce. Looked yummy though. EVERYTHING LOOKED YUMMY! I polished off my bowl, of course.

Pumpkin bread = mm

We went dessert-ing (my cries for ice cream went unheeded!) at the Union Square Market, where I bought a loaf of pumpkin bread for $1.75. It's hard to beat that. Except I shouldn't buy something that big because I will eat the whole thing. Which I did (all 10 oz of it, minus a few bits I shared). Ava and Diana got apples (err healthy, yes!) and we all retreated back to the SVA student's lounge (they both go to SVA) where we chomped on our farmer's market foods while watching bits of Ghost Busters from afar. :)

My day was very nice despite the rain up to that point.

Sirupssnipper

Morten gave me a recipe for traditional Norwegian cookies called Sirupssnipper, which translates to something like "molasses collars" since the recipe calls for molasses and then you're supposed to cut them into collar shapes (photo on this page). Here's the recipe he translated:

---

  • 250 grams molasses
  • 125 grams sugar
  • 1 decilitre cream
  • 1 decilitre water

Boil and let cool

    500 grams flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoon salt of hartshorn (it leavens the dough a bit)
  • 1/2 teaspoon pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried ginger
  • 1/2 teaspoon clove
  • a bit star anise
  • a bit rind from pomerang

Mix the dries with the now cool fluid and let is stand for 12 hours. Roll the dough thinly and make shapes like the collars of nice shirts* :) Decorate with almonds dipped in sugarwater.

Bake 200 C for 5-8 minutes

---

The kitchen is semi ready for DOUGH MAKING

I halved the recipe and omitted the sugar and used honey instead of molasses, so I'm already going to get cookies that probably don't taste like the real things. I also didn't have all the exact spices, nor was I sure what "a bit" was. And I didn't have baking powder (you can use the same amount to replace hartshorn, which is a leavener), so I used baking soda and put some lemon juice in the mixture because from what I learned in my foods class, you're supposed to balance baking soda with an acid. I wasn't sure how much to put in though, so I might have lemon honey cookies. Oh, also put in chinese five spice powder and a random amount of pepper because the only pepper I had was peppercorns in a grinder. Overall, I didn't mix the dry ingredients well because for some reason it just didn't occur in my brain to MIX THEM WELL (that would actually have to be in the instructions for me to remember, sadly). Since i've never eaten the real cookies before, I can't compare mine to the real thing. My dough is in the fridge now, sitting. I'll bake em tomorrow and tell you the grisly results.

all day fooding

I woke up at around noon and have been eating all day. I never had an actual meal, but have just been constantly snacking, mainly on those Norwegian cookie-things. They actually turned out more like biscuits and I have a feeling I didn't put in enough sweetener (the honey is very un-sweet for a honey) or flavorings and I put in too much baking soda. Of course, I still like em because I seem to be addicted to wheat products, but they're like...mini diamond shaped biscuits. :) Many apologies to Morten who would probably die if he tried them!

The ice cream base is cooling in the fridge and the mashed sweet potatoes are still just potatoes. I'll add the milk and stuff later. And I'm going to make gravy because we have turkey stock. Making gravy is fun! At least it was that first time I did it in lab.

I really like Pellegrino. I don't drink soda but I like natural sparkling water, I guess. My mum bought a huge case of em from BJs so I've been drinking a lot of it and probably filling myself with gas. Mm. Natural gas.

Thanksgiving is over

So the fooding is over, more or less. I ate so much today, I can't believe I haven't exploded. I have no idea how I'm going to digest anything. The weirdest thing is that my stomach still doesn't seem to fill up much, which is good, but there's no way food goes straight from m esophagus to my intestines. It does end up in my stomach, for a while...but I guess not that long? Eeeuh. Wait, maybe nothing is really being digested.

Sooo my food came out okay. The stuff I made that came out the best were the sweet mashed potatoes and the gravy. And then some things came out ...not so good.

Sirupssnipper, but not really. At least they're not round!

I'm positiive that the sirupssnipper came out totally wrong even though I've never eaten the real thing before. Since they're supposed to be cookies, I don't think they were supposed to end up with a biscuit-like texture and they were probably suppposed to be thinner. The honey I used wasn't very sweet, so they also kind of taste like lemony biscuits since I put some lemon juice in it. I couldn't taste the spices, but the cookies would probably taste different if I hadn't put them in.

Mm, food

My mum always makes the turkey and it always comes out good! Even though I don't absolutely love meat, I like turkey. Then again I'll eat any food/meat, or try it once.

Mashed sweet potatoes

The mashed sweet potatoes had:

  • 3 sweet potatoes
  • 3/4th cup of heavy cream
  • 1/2 tbsp cinnamon
  • 1/4 tbsp salt

Cook potatoes (my mum baked em), mash potatoes, add liquid, moosh around until it looks like mashed potatoes. You could use milk instead of heavy cream and add butter or something, but...I like heavy cream. Mm yes. If you like sweet stuff, then this is yum.

Fresh from the ice cream machine, bwaaahaha

My favorite food was the ice cream. Because I love ice cream. It was basic:

  • 3/4 cup water
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 3 egg yolks
  • 1/2 cup honey
  • mashed cooked chestnuts (I didn't measure this but between 1 and 2 cups)

I cooked everything except for the yolks first and then poured the cooked liquid into the yolk. After letting it cool, my mum put it in the ice cream machine. Voila. WEE.

For being so obscenely full of food, I feel strangely okay. I felt blech right after I finished eating the ice cream but by now I feel better. I could've done worse. ;)

--- UPDATE ---

The next day, my liver and pancreas became sore. I'm not kidding. At least, I think they did, which is quit a feat sing organs don't generally hurt. Those are rather important organs, so...um. Ungood. My entire bodybecame sore, so I decided to wake up late and skip possibly eating too much. I guess I had an about 16 hour fast, which isn't much of a fast.

My organs...:(

November 27, 2004

binging

I started reading a book last night about eating disorders for one of my classes and there was a section about binge eaters. I don't have a very serious binge eating problem, although today I stayed home while my mum and brother went to Buffet 23 since I knew I'd probably eat too much. I ended up eating seemingly everything in the house while they were gone though, so I probably missed the point.

Anyway. One method people use to control their binge eating is to not have food in the house. This was my method until I got a roommate. Of course she should be allowed to have whatever food she wants, but that is truly the only way for me to not eat craploads of food unless the only choices of food in the house are canned soup, ramen, and beer (just throwing out some foods that I'm not likely to eat).

I think my organs feel better today.

Mitsuwa

Since I hadn't gone outside in more than two days, I went to Mitsuwa with my mum. I hadn't been there in ages and it changed a bit since the last time I went, such as the removal of Kinokuniya by another book store that doesn't have as many music magazines. :( I wanted to get Korean food but that vendor (along with the Chinese vendor) have cleared out to make way for a ramen place that hasn't opened yet. Part of the food court area was being prepared for a Hokkaido festival thing that's going to happen next weekend.

Japanese fake food displays rock
I haven't had soba in ages...it's quite good

I got soba and my mum got ramen. There were lots of veggies in mine, but I didn't know the name. My mum said it was some kind of mountain vegetable. Hm.

Japanese pumkin pie
Freshly made oobanyaki

My mum would always buy oobanyaki when I was little, usually a box of five. Today we bought one taiyaki, which is like a fish-shaped oobanyaki that is slightly larger. Since they had just made them, it was deliciously crisp on the ouside and soft on the inside. The two sides never seem to splodge together perfectly but it doesn't matter because it tastes SO GOOD. YES. If you like red bean paste and pancakes, you gotta find oobanyaki or taiyaki.

today's food

For lunch:

  • some turkey and gravy
  • 5 shortbread cookies
  • 1 daifuku mochi
  • 1 persimmon
  • 1 apple

For dinner:

  • 1 carrot nut muffin
  • 1 brownie (it was like eating chocolate flavored sugar....mm)

Dinner was from Au Bon Pain because their stuff is 50% off from 4-6PM. I never had a brownie from there before. It's yummy. I know that's an awful dinner. Maybe I'll eat a persimmon later.

I'm surprised I'm not dead yet from what I eat. It'll catch up with me, I guess. This weekend I had the most frequent occurences of asthma I've had in months. Bad sign. I guess I should cut out wheat, because I don't feel like I overate terribly. No more wheat. NO MORE AU BON PAN SALES.

November 29, 2004

NYU fooding

I met up with Grace for lunch around the NYU area. We went to the Sunrise Mart after going to Otofuku and seeing it was closed.

Jap chae with rice and stuffff

Grace and I bought some Korean food from the store (my bowl was $4; I also bought "Zoo Land printed biscuits" for $1.09) and went to McDonalds to eat it. I guess they didn't care, haha. Not like there wasn't enough space inside and we didn't use their bathrooms.

Grace suggested ice cream and I always being in the mood for ice cream happily agreed to seek some out. ;) I took her to Mary's Dairy, which I went to once before. It's yum. But before that, we took a quick look at a nearby chocolate shop that I hadn't noticed before. I got a chocolate covered marshmallow + graham cracker (yummy, of course; how could such a combination not be?) and milk chocolate almond bark. Mm, it's good and not too expensive (bark was about $20/lb). I have a feeling I'll be going back. It seem like they do a lot of business, so yay for continuous batches of chocolate!

Mary's Dairy ice cream cake

I've never actually bought a slice of ice cream cake before, but you can't usually buy a slice ($3.95, not bad). I could probably eat an ENTIRE cake. I think I'm better off eating ice cream cake than real cake, since there's no wheat. It was very yummy with a top later of chocolate fudge ice cream on top of vanilla ice cream and a layer of raspberry in between on an oreo cookie crust and nuts on the outside. I must eat it again! I also ate some of Grace's cookie dough ice cream. Whenever we eat together I always end up eating some of her stuff. If we keep eating together, she'll lose weight and I'll gain it. ;)

Italian, Chinese, and BAKED

Good lord, fooding today was absolutely nuts.

Chicken PARM! Lookit the cheeez

I went to Umberto's Clam House with Mimi. It was the first time I went to an Italian restaurant in years, perhaps. I got chicken parm, which I used to get all the time when I was little and frequently went to Italian restaurants (mainly a place near my house, Tony's Brothers). It was pretty good, part of the $13 lunch special that came with a salad. Mimi wanted to try the linguini with white clam sauce since PBS told her it was good, but she said it was a little overrated. It wasn't bad, just not "OHMYGOD, YES" good. ;) I liked my dish but I couldn't finish the pasta. ROBYN DIDN'T FINISH HER FOOD, it's a miracle.

Then we went to Ferrara. Good. Lord. It is. SO GOOD. The end. I had a cannoli and Mimi had this amazing THING called sfogliatella. Simply amazing. That photo doesn't do it justice. All those little lines are like separate layers and the inside is ...mm...okay I have to get one the next time I go.

I thought we were done. Hell, I was done. But the Mimi wanted to go to Tea and Tea on Mulberry. I got a chocolate shake. It was okay but not worth $3. I like shakes that I have to suck the life out of in order to get through the straw, aka, what is basically ice cream...that I try to eat with a straw.

Who doesn't like chocolate chip cookies? FREAKS! I ate a lot of the batter. :)

For dinner I ate cookies, scones, and pie crusts, courtesy of my food lab. SO MANY COOKIES. SO MANY SCONES. Pie crusts taste pretty good at first, but when you have to sample five of them (prepared with different kinds of fat), you get sick of em. But they're pretty good. I made the crust in my lab group and it came out a bit odd, but hey, it was my first time. Ingredients:

2 cups flour
1/2 tbsp salt
5 oz margarine
5-7 tbsp water

It comes out flaky when you cut in the fat. YES, I KNOW MY STUFF! Cutting in cold fat makes stuff flaky because the fat steams while the thing is baking. Mm flakes.

I ate a lot of chocolate chip cookie dough. I've never eaten so much cookie dough in my life. It's yummy though.

I'm the biggest glutton I know. Why don't I have diabetes yet?
